Synopsis

David Gladwell directs this adaptation of the novel by Doris Lessing following the experiences of a woman in a dystopian future world. D (Julie Christie) is one of the survivors of a war that has all but laid waste to civilised life. From the comparative safety of her flat she looks down on streets piled with rubbish and patrolled by lawless gangs. Keeping her company is Emily (Leonie Mellinger), a young woman delivered into her care. Fantasy begins to blur with reality as D begins having visions of a past world in which Emily was neglected by her parents. However, with Emily growing closer to Gerald (Christopher Guard), the leader of a group of vagrants, the demands of the real world weigh ever more greatly upon D.
