An Indian family, one of many forced out of Uganda by dictator Idi Amin, settles in the American South. Years later new racial problems surface between the Indian immigrants and the local black community. This tension comes to a head when the daughter of the family (Sarita Choudhury), now 24, falls in love with a black carpet cleaner played by Denzel Washington.
