Synopsis

A box set of films about modern-day Asian life. 'Monsoon Wedding' is Mira Nair's award-winning portrait of a contemporary India in which ancient tradition combines seamlessly with 21st century modernity. Set during the on-set of the monsoon season, the film follows the members of the Verma family as they prepare for the wedding of daughter Aditi (Vasundhara Das) to Hemant (Parvin Dabas), a family friend who now lives and works in Houston, Texas. As the hour of the ceremony approaches, Aditi makes a confession to Hemant which could endanger their plans; while cousin Ria (Shefali Shetty) comes closer to revealing a disturbing secret from her childhood; and wedding planner P.K. Dubey (Vijay Raaz) finds himself falling in love with the family maid Alice (Tilotama Shome). 'East is East' is set in Salford, 1971. Pakistani chip shop owner George Khan (Om Puri) lives with his white wife Ella (Linda Bassett) and their seven children. George wants to raise his children as devout Muslims, but things go wrong when his eldest son Nazir (Ian Aspinall) flees his arranged marriage midway through the ceremony. Undeterred, George plans a marriage for his son Tariq (Jimi Mistry), but when Tariq discovers what is happening he rebels against his father, and the future of the family is plunged into doubt. Whilst 'Bhaji on the Beach' is director Gurinder Chadha's landmark debut feature and the first to be helmed by a British Asian woman. The story concerns a day-trip to Blackpool by a disparate group of Indian women from the Saheli Asian Women's Group. The group includes battered wife Ginder (Kim Vithana), refusing to stand by her man (much to the chagrin of her elders), unmarried teenage mum-to-be Hashida (Sarita Khajura), shunned by the same elders for her relationship with a black man, and respectable shop assistant Asha (Lalita Ahmed), who escapes into a fantasy world from her drab day-to-day existence when she is charmed by a local playboy thesp. Also along for the day are a middle-class Bombay woman of tasteless glamour and a couple of boy-crazy teenage girls.
