Powerful drama from African director Ousmane Sembene, tackling the controversial issue of female circumcision. In a small village in Burkino Faso, four young girls flee a circumcision ritual and seek shelter with Collé (Fatoumata Coulibaly), a circumcised woman who helped her daughter escape the ceremony many years earlier. She gives the girls sanctuary, but this opens a rift in her village with those traditionalists who think the ritual should go ahead. As the two opposing sets of values begin to clash, tensions begin to rise in the village.
