Synopsis

Live performance at London's National Theatre of the adaptation of the book by Katherine Boo, who, over the course of three years, recorded the lives of residents in an Indian slum. Set in Annawadi, a slum in Mumbai, the play follows residents such as young garbage picker Abdul (Shane Zaza) and his mother Zehrunisa (Meera Syal); would-be slumlord Asha (Stephanie Street) and her daughter Manju (Anjana Vasan), who hopes to be the first female of Annawadi to become a college graduate; and small 12-year-old Sunil (Hiran Abeysekera), who is desperate to grow tall. They each face the challenges of slum life including hunger, disease and violence, and when one of the inhabitants makes a false accusation against Abdul and his family it has a devastating effect on the entire community.
