Synopsis

Live performance of Christopher Hampton's stage adaptation of the novel by Choderlos de Laclos which demonstrates the hollowness and fragility of society in pre-revolution France. Recorded at the Donmar Warehouse, London, the story follows two French aristocrats and former lovers who use sordid tactics of seduction and sex to exact revenge upon each other. The Marquise de Merteuil (Janet McTeer) challenges the Vicomte de Valmont (Dominic West) to seduce the virginal 15-year-old Cecile (Elaine Cassidy) so the Marquise may spite Cecile's intended husband who rebuffed her in the past. The Vicomte obliges, only as he wishes to torment the devoted spouse of a magistrate. Both nobles become entangled in their messy machinations which only complicate their own relationship further.
