Live performance of the comedy play written by Oliver Goldsmith, recorded at London's National Theatre. Wealthy man Mr. Hardcastle (Steve Pemberton) hopes to make a match between his daughter, Kate (Katherine Kelly), and affluent young gentleman Charles Marlow (Harry Hadden-Paton). However, Kate's half-brother, Tony (David Fynn), leads Charles and his friend, George Hastings (John Heffernan), to believe that the Hardcastle household is actually an inn and that Kate is a barmaid. His trick turns out to benefit Charles who finds it easier to talk to women of a lower social status. Soon he and Kate are falling for one another while George and Constance Neville (Cush Jumbo), who lives with the Hardcastles and is due to marry Tony, develop a secret relationship.
