National Theatre: The Cherry Orchard Film Poster

Howard Davies directs this National Theatre production of Anton Chekhov's last play, based on a modernised script by Australian writer Andrew Upton. Zoe Wanamaker stars as the doomed landowner Ranyevskaya, who returns bankrupt to Russia after ten years abroad. Stubbornly hanging on to their rapidly fading aristocratic world and heedless of the hostile forces conspiring against them, Ranyevskaya and her brother (James Laurenson) seal their fate when they turn their backs on a scheme devised by peasant-turned-entrepreneur Lopakhin (Conleth Hill) to save the family estate.
