Synopsis

Nicholas Hytner directs this National Theatre production of the play by Nicholas Wright that pays tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood's golden age. In a remote Eastern European village (or 'shtetl'), circa 1900, the young Motl Mendl (Damien Molony) is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father's cinematograph. Receiving financial backing from local timber merchant Jacob (Antony Sher) and inspired by Anna (Lauren O'Neil), the girl sent to help him make a document of his village in moving pictures, Motl stumbles on the revolutionary idea of translating dramatic narrative onto the big screen. 40 years on, Motl - now a famous director in 1930s Hollywood - looks back at his early life and faces the true cost of fulfilling his dreams.
