1950s Bollywood drama telling the story of two friends, tongawala Shankar (Dilip Kumar) and woodcutter Krishna (Ajit), who live in a happy and peaceful village. However, the two friends become enemies after falling in love with the same girl, Rajni (Vyjantimala). Meanwhile, Kundan (Jeevan), the greedy city-bred son of the local timber merchant, brings turmoil to the community by introducing new technology and machinery into the community in an attempt to make quicker and bigger profits, with no regard for the lives of the local farmers, tongawala and wood-cutters.
