Synopsis

As cute and sharp as it's nine-year-old star Tatum O'Neal, Peter Bogdanovich's Depression-era comedy finds a con artist (Tatum's dad Ryan) saddled with the daughter he never knew. But luck would have it that the girl has the gift of the grift. The acting is wonderful, the black-and-white cinematography is exceptional, and it rolls along so merrily that you don't realise how touching it is until the very end. A bona-fide gem.
