Synopsis

Tobey Maguire stars as American chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer in this biographical drama. During his childhood in the 1940s, Fischer (Maguire/Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick/Aiden Lovekamp) begins his journey to become an expert chess player as he immerses himself in the game before becoming the youngest ever grandmaster at 15-years-old. However, after accusing the Soviets of collusion against him at the 1962 Chess Olympiad in Bulgaria, he retires from professional chess before being coaxed back to play by an offer of rule changes. After regaining his focus on the game, Fischer loses to Russian Boris Spassky (Liev Schreiber) in the 1966 Piatigorsky Cup in Santa Monica, California but their rematch six years later, during the height of the Cold War, at the 1972 World Chess Championship, would attract global media attention and become known across the world as the match of the century.
