Texas, 1930. Edna Spalding (Sally Field) is struggling to raise her two children after her husband is killed by a drunk. Her fortunes worsen when she learns that the bank will foreclose on her property, which includes a 40 acre cotton field. Determined to keep hold of her land, she decides to plant and harvest the cotton herself, and hires help from laborer Moze (Danny Glover). In addition she takes in a blind lodger Mr Will (John Malkovich), and the unlikely trio struggle to survive. The film won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
