Frank Capra remakes one of his first big successes, 'Lady for a Day' (1933), in this, his last film. Apple Annie (Bette Davis), a Broadway fruit seller, has hit a spot of bad luck: her daughter, who has been educated abroad and believes Annie to be a wealthy member of New York high society, is coming to visit. What should Annie do? How can she prevent her daughter from learning the truth? Dave the Dude (Glenn Ford) has the answer. They will take a group of colourful 42nd Street characters and pass them off as the cream of New York society. A madcap plan, but it will work, won't it?
