Wartime musical starring Vera Lynn as a woman who strikes up a friendship with a mysterious man who lives in the grounds of an old house. Ann Martin (Lynn) faces a tough choice when the school for evacuees at which she teaches closes down: how best to help the war effort? She takes up the offer of running a daycare centre for the children of women working in the local factory and sets about restoring an old, empty house for the purpose. While at her work she comes across John (Peter Murray-Hill), a troubled man who lives in the grounds of the building. Ann sets about helping John and quickly falls in love with him, but how will the revelation of the secret that has driven him from society affect her?
