Comedy exploring the turmoil of various foreign visitors as they attempt to adjust to the vibrancy and diversity of Rio de Janeiro. Charlotte (Charlotte Rampling) is a plastic surgeon from England who seems strangely disinclined to promote her trade. William (Bill Pullman) is an American ambassador who, struggling to deal with the responsibilities of the role, seeks escape from his supervisors in the city's most dangerous favela. French couple Irène (Irène Jacob) and Antoine (Jean-Marc Roulot) are in Rio to make an anthropological film, but Irène's own anthropological impulses threaten the harmony of the relationship. Director Jonathan Nossiter tells the tale of each character separately, using them as a device to explore the different social spheres of the city, from expensive private hospitals to the poorest slums.
