Synopsis

Maurizio Benini conducts the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus in this live performance of Donizetti's tragic opera in New York. Set in Westminster, London around 1599-1601, the story centres on the relationship between Robert Devereux (Matthew Polenzani), 2nd Earl of Essex and Queen Elizabeth I (Sondra Radvanovsky). Robert, Governor of Ireland and particular favourite of Elizabeth's, is charged with treason after agreeing a ceasefire with a rebel group. Queen Elizabeth I finds herself with no other option than to order that Robert should die as punishment.
