Royal Opera 2015/2016 Season: Werther Film Poster

Live in Cineworld - Benoit Jacquot's sumptous production of Massenet's tragic opera. Werther is in love with Charlotte. However, she has promised to her dying mother that she will marry Albert. Heartbroken, Werther decides to travel the world but finds he cannot forget her. And soon, the unhappily married Charlotte falls in love with him through the power of his letters. One of Massenet's most enduringly popular productions, Werther had its premiere in 1892 and since 1903 it has been a permanent part of the international repertory. Now, director Benoit Jacquot's sweeping production for The Royal Opera is broadcast live in Cineworld, with a libretto by Edouard Blau. Massenet's music as ever promises to play on the heartstrings, with classic pieces including the 'Clair de lune,' 'Lied d'Ossian' and Charlotte's closing 'Priere.' Charles Edwards' evocative set designs and Christian Gasc's costumes further help bring Massenet's beautiful classic to life.
