1930s drama starring Pat O'Brien, Humphrey Bogart and Ann Sheridan. Steve Jameson (O'Brien) is an ex-army officer working as a guard at a Californian prison. He falls for May (Sheridan), a singer whose brother, Joe (Bogart), is currenty in San Quentin jail. As Steve and May develop a relationship, he decides not to tell her about his position at the prison, hoping to avoid conflict. When their romance is revealed to Joe by an envious guard, however, the convict goes after Steve, looking for revenge.
