Sansho The Bailiff Film Poster

Synopsis

Kenji Mizoguchi's masterly period drama was his third film in successive years to win the Golden Lion at Venice. In eleventh century Japan, a noble family are rent asunder after the father, a local governor, attempts to treat peasants in a humane manner. The son, Zushio (Yoshiaki Hanayagi), and daughter, Anju (Kyoko Kagawa), are sold into slavery to an evil bailiff, Sansho (Eitaro Shindo). Zushio begins to adopt Sansho's barbaric ways, despite Anju's constant reminders of their exiled father's noble sacrifice.
