Intense drama about the dark side of the American Dream. Jack Lemmon won an Academy Award for his portrayal of venal businessman Harry Stoner, a man on the edge after his shady business deals threaten to catch up with him. Following a lifetime of infidelity, of profiting from underhand deals and living a life of untrammelled immorality, Stoner is forced to torch his own warehouse in an attempt to collect on the insurance money after his company gets into financial trouble. While giving a speech to potential clients, he suffers a flashback to World War Two and hallucinates that his audience is comprised of his dead army buddies. Stoner is forced to the conclusion that these men died to make a better world, but a world in which people like him can profit.
