Paul Whitehurst (Martin Sheen) looks back at a particularly memorable summer of his childhood, spent with the idiosyncratic Vernon Dabney (Harvey Keitel) and his ebullient wife Trixie (Andie MacDowell). Now penniless, but from wealthy plantation stock, the couple are shocked by the arrival of a black 99-year old former slave, who tells them he is a long-lost relative. If his ancestral claims are proved correct, he is entitled to be buried on their land, and Dabney has to face some hard truths about himself as he considers the old man's request.
