Synopsis

Two-part series examining the work of William Shakespeare. Historian Simon Schama turns his focus on how people viewed Shakespeare throughout his lifetime and what they thought of his seminal works, examining the possible reasons behind his seemingly national and class-spanning appeal. From Elizabeth I's love of Falstaff to his own attitudes to his most famous characters, the programme also explores the role he played in revolutionising the English language to shed new light on his much-loved works.
