The first feature film from writer-director (and Hackney resident) Faruk Hacihafizoglu has already been lauded at festivals worldwide. 1981… Turkey is on the brink of one of the most brutal coup d’états in its history, but also facing one of the harshest winters of recent years. In historic Kars, the need for coal is as acute as the need for freedom, but both are accessible to the very few. Teenage boys Serhat, Gürbüz and Ibo have no more to their name than their dreams and toboggans, but they are about to embark on a journey which is not just a search for coal but one which will teach them much about the realities and responsibilities of life. The three boys bring their characters wonderfully to life, the snowy landscapes are beautifully shot and it all builds up to a very tense climax indeed. The late night screening on Friday October 7 will be introduced by the director of SNOW PIRATES Faruk Hacihafizoglu, who will also be taking part in a Q&A after the afternoon screening on Saturday October 8.
