First four episodes of the celebrated BBC television adaptation of the classic novels by Anthony Trollope about the march of progress in the small town of Barchester. In episode one, Septimus Harding (Donald Pleasence) becomes the target of an investigation into misappropriated church funds. In episode two, John Bold (David Gwillim) is forced to withdraw his accusations against Harding when he becomes engaged to his daughter Eleanor (Janet Maw). Episode three sees Barchester's complacency shattered by a series of power struggles, while in episode four, honour forces Harding to refuse Rev. Slope's (Alan Rickman) offer to reinstate him as warden.
