Synopsis

Brenda Blethyn stars in this comedy drama about a graduate wishing to join a closed order of nuns. With her graduation looming, Joanna (Emily Beecham) shocks her friends, family and boyfriend by revealing her lifelong desire to become a nun. Arriving at the Benedictine convent, however, Joanna soon wonders if she's made the right choice after all when she's confronted by an odd collection of characters including a mentally-deranged Mother Superior (Susannah York), and a free-thinking politically active novice, Sister Ignacious (Blethyn). Nevertheless, over the coming weeks as Joanna begins to bond with her fellow sisters, she begins to realise her own spiritual needs, leading her to examine her beliefs as never before, and propelling her into an unforeseen destiny.
