Sidney Lumet directs this brooding spy drama, based on the novel `Call for the Dead' by John le Carre. James Mason stars as Charles Dobbs, a British intelligence officer who is sent to investigate an anonymous letter sent to the foreign secretary accusing a key officer, Robert Flemyng (Samuel Fennan) of communist affiliation. When Flemying commits suicide, Dobbs begins to suspect that his wife, a concentration camp survivor, may hold the key to his despair. But the Foreign Office wants to drop the case, so Dobbs hires soon-to-retire Detective Inspector Mendel (Harry Andrews) to delve further into the circumstances behind Flemying's death - which turn out to be more sinister than Dobbs could have imagined. Maximilian Schell, Harriet Andersson, Lynn Redgrave and Corin Redgrave co-star.
