Synopsis

Bette Davis stars in this classic drama directed by William Wyler. Regina Hubbard (Davis) was born into the Hubbard family but denied equal inheritance to her brothers Benjamin (Charles Dingle) and Oscar (Carl Benton Reid) purely because of her gender. She marries Horace Giddens (Herbert Marshall), a wealthy but sick man, in the hope that she will out-live him and get his money. When her brothers approach Regina with a plan to build a cotton mill on Oscar's wife Birdie (Patricia Collinge)'s plantation, she asks Horace for the funds for her share but he refuses. As Benjamin and Oscar concoct a scheme to get the money themselves, Regina learns of their plan and sets about blackmailing them for a larger share in the business. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director (Wyler) and Best Actress (Davis).
