As a young man, Bertold Bohmer (Armin Mueller-Stahl) dreamed of winning the Comrades Marathon, a gruelling 54 mile race across a South African desert. Now in his 60s, Bertold has worked as a running coach for much of his life, and as he begins training this year's batch of young-hopefuls ready for the Comrades, he suddenly finds himself dismissed from his job and replaced by a younger man. However, rather than give in to despair and inactivity, Bertold finds hope in Christine (Nthati Moshesh), a young untrained runner he's seen on the street and in whom he recognises the talent needed to win the Comrades. Can he help her realise her potential and win the race he always dreamed of winning himself? Will she agree to train with him and accept the discipline that such an agreement requires?
