Based on the play 'Les Bonnes' by French absurdist writer Jean Genet, this theatre-to-screen adaptation is part of the American Film Theatre series. Glenda Jackson and Susannah York play Solange and Claire, two sisters who work for the formidable 'Madame' (Vivien Merchant). The sisters' ambivalent and passionate feelings towards their employer manifest themselves in a bout of frenetic role play when Madame and Monsieur (Mark Burns) leave the house for the day: they dress up in her clothes, alternate between acting the roles of master and the servant, and insult Madame to the point of plotting her murder. But their intense, highly-charged frolics come to a sudden and dramatic end when their murder plot tragically backfires...
