Vincent Ward's imaginative fusion of history, myth and fantasy uses striking visuals to tell its powerful allegorical tale. It is Cumbria, 1348, the year of the Black Death. A young boy, Griffin, has a prophetic vision of how to save his village from the encroaching plague - they must make a tribute to God by placing a spire on a distant cathedral before dawn. A small band of brave believers start on a journey in search of the cathedral. They climb down a deep tunnel, seemingly endless, but emerge in twentieth-century Auckland, New Zealand - having been through the middle of the earth! Once there the band of medieval travellers have to cope with the bizarre modern world whilst completing their quest.
