Synopsis

Collection of five film comedies and a television series from Jim Abrahams and brothers David and Jerry Zucker. In 'Airplane!' (1980), former fighter pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays) hasn't flown since the war, when an error of judgement on his part led to the decimation of his squadron. Now he has a drink problem (he keeps missing his mouth) and his girlfriend - air hostess Elaine Dickinson (Julie Hagerty) - has walked out on him. Desperate to get her back, Ted follows her onto her next flight, which goes horribly wrong when the entire cabin crew succumbs to food poisoning mid-air. Aided by Elaine, the unflappable Doctor Rumack (Leslie Nielsen) and his former nemesis Rex Kramer (Robert Stack) back at air control, Ted makes a valiant effort to fly the plane to safety. But has he still got what it takes? In 'Top Secret!' (1984), Val Kilmer plays Nick Rivers, a rock 'n' roll singer on tour in East Germany who has a chance meeting with Hillary Flammond (Lucy Gutteridge) and agrees to help free her imprisoned scientist father (Michael Gough). Before he knows it he's joined the French resistance and is attempting to thwart a Communist takeover of the West. In 'Police Squad', Frank Drebbin (Nielsen) leads his bungling detective squad in the comedy series that inspired the 'Naked Gun' films. Full of ridiculous moments such as when the weekly special guest star is introduced during the opening title sequence and killed as soon as their name is read, never to be seen in the episode again. William Shatner, for example, dodges several bullets before sitting down to a glass of poisoned wine. Even the title sequence itself isn't straightforward - the title of the episode appears on the screen while a voiceover says something entirely different. Hence, episodes comprise: 'A Substantial Gift (The Broken Promise)', 'Ring of Fear (A Dangerous Assignment)', 'Rendezvous at Big Gulch (Terror in the Neighborhood)', 'Revenge and Remorse (The Guilty Alibi),' 'The Butler Did It (A Bird in the Hand)' and 'Testimony of Evil (Dead Men Don't Laugh)'. 'The Naked Gun' (1988) is the first big screen spin-off from 'Police Squad'. Bungling Los Angeles police lieutenant Frank Drebin (Nielsen) is investigating potential drug smuggler Vincent Ludwig (Ricardo Montalban) when he falls for the magnate's attractive secretary, Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley). However, the pair's budding romance is placed in jeopardy when Frank's boss (George Kennedy) tells him that an assassination attempt is being planned on the visiting Queen of England - and it is up to the inept Frank to prevent it. 'The Naked Gun 2 1/2' (1991) finds Drebin (Nielsen) back on the case, but still nursing his wounds following the end of his relationship with beautiful Jane Spencer (Presley). However, the pair are unexpectedly reunited when Jane's boss Quentin Hapsburg (Robert Goulet) secretly hatches a plot to destroy Earth's environment. Can Frank expose Hapsburg's evil plot and win back his old love? Finally, in 'Naked Gun 33 1/3' (1994), Drebin (Nielsen) is called out of retirement when his old department learns of a terrorist plot to hold the Oscar night attendees to ransom. Forced to go undercover in order to infiltrate the gang, Frank unwittingly arouses the suspicions of his doting bride Jane (Presley), and even if Frank succeeds in foiling the terrorists on the big night, can his relationship with Jane survive?
