The Professor Film Poster

Italian gangster thriller starring Ben Gazzara and Laura del Sol, based on the true-life story of Raffaele Cutolo, who during the 1970s and early 1980s organized the Naples mafia into a major crime syndicate. Gazzara stars as the eponymous Professor, so nicknamed because he had studied medicine in an attempt to escape from the criminal environment in which he was raised. When he brutally kills a man during a crime of passion defending the honor of his sister, Rosaria (del Sol), he is sent to prison where he embarks on a bloody rise to power from behind bars, beginning with the reorganiziation of the once powerful but now fading Camorra mafia group. As ruthless as he is brilliant, the Professor wastes no time in gaining the respect of his fellow inmates. As his reputation increases, so does his influence, eventually reaching beyond the common crooks and gangsters doing his dirty work to those in the highest offices of Italian politics and society. With her brother controlling things from behind bars, Rosaria soon becomes intrextricably involved in the corruption and murder as Italy's streets begin to run red with the blood of anyone who dares to oppose the Professor.
