Xiao-kang (Lee Kang-sheng) is an unemployed teenager from a dysfunctional Taipei family: his father (Miao Tien) frequents gay bars, while his mother (Lu Hsiao-ling) is having an affair with a porn film director. After Xiao-kang obtains a day's work as a movie extra - lying in a polluted river - he develops a mysterious pain in his neck and shoulder, which no treatment seems able to cure.
