Synopsis

Classic British drama starring Richard Attenborough as school teacher Stephen Leigh. When Stephen meets Tod (Colin Petersen), a young boy accused of shoplifting, and finds out about his unsettled and unschooled life, he is eager to enroll him at his school. When Tod's father (Terence Morgan) announces that he's found work in the US, Stephen offers to look after Tod in his absence. As Stephen and his wife Barbara (Dorothy Alison) are unable to have children, they initially view Tod's arrival as a blessing. But, as the young rascal struggles to adapt to English middle-class life, the couple begin to question their decision. Stephen and Tod, however, share a love of music, and this shared love strengthens the bond between them. Things are looking up for the Leighs until Tod's father comes back from America with his new bride (Jill Adams) and demands the return of his son...
