Synopsis

Using archive footage and the testimony of eyewitnesses, volume 17 of the documentary series examines two of the crucial battles of the Second World War. At Kursk Hitler sought to reverse his fortunes after the German defeat in the battles around Moscow and Stalingrad. Building up the greatest armoured force in history, the panzers were unleashed against the Russians and were utterly defeated, turning the tide forever on the Eastern Front. The ill-advised British defence of Crete in 1941 is the subject of the second part, where the Germans achieved victory using a surprise paratrooper assault and the British were forced to evacuate.
