James Franco and Jonah Hill star in this thriller based on the memoirs of Michael Finkel. Journalist for the New York Times Michael Finkel (Hill) has worked tirelessly to become a successful writer and to provide for his wife Jill (Felicity Jones). After his boss claims he fabricated a story to make it sound more interesting, he loses his job and his sense of purpose. When he receives a phone call asking for his opinion on the news that convicted killer Christian Longo (Franco) used Finkel's name when he was arrested for murdering his wife and three children, his inner-journalist springs to life and he decides to pay Longo a visit in prison. As he becomes absorbed in Longo's story and his version of events of that fateful night, Longo agrees to give Finkel exclusive access to his story in exchange for writing lessons. As the pair begin a pen pal-style relationship, Finkel starts to doubt Longo's story.
