Classic melodrama exposing the less glamorous side of Hollywood life in the 1960s. Three ambitious young women (played by Barbara Parkins, Patty Duke and Sharon Tate) strive for showbiz success, but get caught up in the seedy underside of the celebrity lifestyle: connivances and contrivances, ego and exploitation, alcohol and pills (the 'dolls' of the title). In its time, the film was considered shocking, and it remains a pertinent critique of the pitfalls of fame and fortune.
