Before emigrating to Europe, 17-year-old Abdallah visits his mother in the small coastal town of Nouadhibou, which lies at the edge of the vast Mauritanian desert. Whilst he finds himself unable to speak the local language and shies away from village customs and festivities, being more interested in the fashions of Europe, Abdallah finds himself becoming more involved in the lives of the inhabitants of this strange and unfamiliar world.
