Black comedy set in an afterlife for suicides. After cutting his wrists, Zia (Patrick Fugit) finds himself in a dull, yet quirky, afterlife where everything is the same as before, just that little bit worse. The jobs are boring and menial, the bars are dank and dingy (and play Joy Division music on an endless loop) and the transport is useless. Determined to escape this bizarre purgatory and be reunited with Desiree (Leslie Bibb) - his one true love who has also offed herself - Zia hits the road in an old station wagon with his new friend, Russian rocker Eugene (Shea Whigham). On the way they pick up hitchhiker Mikal (Shannon Sossamon), who has recently accidentally OD'ed and found herself in limbo, and meet up with Kneller (Tom Waits) who shepherds them on through their journey. With unexpected miracles, darkly comic twists and absurdist humour, this strangely uplifting film celebrates life and love in its own unique way.
