This film is based on the recent much loved novel written at the time by a 21 year old Cecilia Ahern. The story is an unapologetic "chick flick", for those with the slightest apprehension towards the overly sentimental then I would strongly urge you to avoid this film or just hang your cynicism coat on the hook by the door and make yourself comfortable. Holly Kennedy (Hilary Swank) is a savvy New York estate agent, married to fun and impetuous Irish chauffeur, Gerry ("300"'s Gerard Butler). Holly is madly in love with Gerry but also deeply unhappy. She hates her job and Gerry is the only passion in her life. When Gerry dies suddenly, Holly retreats from the world and loses herself in grief. Her friends and family give her space for a few weeks until they decide to surprise her with a visit on her 30th birthday. But everyone gets a surprise when Gerry gives Holly a gift from the grave.Holly plays a delivered tape of Gerry's voice in which he tells her that she will receive a series of letters from him and must do everything he tells her to do, even if she doesn't want to. Holly's mother Patricia (Kathy Bates) is angry that Gerry is interrupting her daughter's grief, while her best friends Denise (Lisa Kudrow) and Sharon (Gina Gershon) are more supportive of Gerry's unusual display of love.Through Gerry's letters, Holly is able to do things she never had the courage to do and gets in touch with the girl she used to be when they met. Her journey of self-discovery is a painful one but for a while at least her friends are happy to help her find the fun and enjoyment in life that Gerry so badly wanted for her.Despite the unusual plot twist, the story is a simple one, and too bogged down in sadness and sentimentality to be overly enjoyable. Watching a woman grieving for her husband while she slowly alienates the people she loves just feels like hard work.The film does have it's sweet moments though and Harry Connick Jnr puts in a good appearance as the schmo who falls in love with the grieving Holly. Ultimately Holly grows through her grief in time for a predictably sentimental ending.

googleTrackerHelper.doTrackPage( '/'PS-I-Love-You-film_options~20738'/Reviews/ViewAll/1' );"}
