Gimme Gimme Gimme

Season 1 (2001)

Lynda La Hughes was such a sight to behold that even her Rice Krispies were stunned into silence. Loud, obnoxious, and with a fine line in sexual deviancy, she was a hard person to like. But along with housemate Tom, she became one half of a double act that is now recognised as a modern classic. In the laugh-out-loud opener, Linda and Tom woke up after a heavy night out to find a mystery man in their kitchen, and both thought they had brought him home the previous night. It turned out that he was a new neighbour called Jez and was married to a woman named Suze, which he explains to them after tricking them into thinking he was an escort. It soon became clear that while Tom and Lynda appeared to hate each other, in truth, each was the other's only friend. However, that didn't stop them trying to get one over on each other at any opportunity. Lynda had plenty of chance to poke fun at Tom when he slipped on an over-buffed floor and broke his leg - shattering his dream of appearing in Crimewatch. While convalescing, he had to witness Lynda throwing herself at every man imaginable - with varying degrees of success. In the episode 'Do They Take Sugar', Lynda's superstar sister, Sharon 'Sugar Walls' Hughes came to visit. In a scene similar to that of the film Notting Hill, Tom opened the door to the paparazzi and they thought he was having an affair with Sugar. Later, Tom began to fear he was getting old and went out clubbing - spending the night with an Italian man called 'Anino'. Linda stayed in and tries to seduce Jez. In the series finale, Tom married an American lesbian, Gloria, so she could stay in the UK with her girlfriend, India, much to Linda's jealousy.

Season 2 (2000)

Those who can, do, and those who can't, teach. That may be a little cynical, but it certainly applied to Tom in the second season of this outrageous sitcom. In the opener, Tom decided to become a drama teacher, setting up a school in the flat. For his first lesson he managed to convince Linda's sister Sugar to learn from his wisdom. Jez and Suze had a new addition to their family, a life-size baby doll which was irresponsibly left in the care of Linda. Later, Linda and Tom were shocked to find a coffin in their living room, even more so when they realised that their landlady Beryl was inside. They started worrying that they'll be homeless and thrown out on the street? until a gorgeous bloke named Pedro turned up. Tom's 30th birthday was the subject of another memorable episode. He said he wanted to wake up to Bucksfizz. Linda surprised him by arranging a party piece, bringing Jez and Suze around to do a birthday dance for him. But Tom wanted the drink, not the group. Tom's dull, boring and prudish parents came to visit, so Tom tried to be more discreet about his sexuality. He persuades Linda to flirt with his dad in order to scare them away. But everything went wrong when Tom discovered that they had a secret of their own. The following week, Tom and Linda went out clubbing and got completely smashed. Tom spent the night with a weird security guard, while Lynda woke up in bed with a woman. She was annoyed at first, until she realises that they did more than just sleep. The season ended with Tom landing a chance to appear in a sofa advert, while Linda started working on a factory line, squirting mashed potato and flirting with her male colleague. Tom made friends with a celebrity and brings him home, but he hated Lynda ('Butt out or get pretty!'), causing friction in the flat.

Season 3 (2001)

Some people fantasise about Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Others have a crush on Johnny Depp. But as far as Tom was concerned the true figure of male perfection has always been Peak Practice's Simon Shepherd, so when he got a chance to meet his idol (sending himself up in brilliant style) it made for some wonderfully embarrassing fawning from the star-struck wannabe. Things got worse for Tom the following week when, after landing a part in a play opposite Tom Cruise, he managed to forget his one and only line on opening night. Lynda got a surprise when her son appeared out of nowhere to catch up on things. Nobody could quite believe it when he turned out to be black. Also, Suze went into labour, much to Tom and Lynda's horror. In the episode Trauma, Lynda was in hospital having fallen off a bus and having a saucepan stuck to her head. When Tom starred in his first major TV show, things went awry when an old flame from school put him a sticky predicament. Linda's dreams of becoming a model came true when Suze got her a chance to be part of a fashion showcase, not knowing it was for ugly people - and viewers finally learned who or what it is she saw when she looked in the mirror. Meanwhile, Tom got singing lessons from Heidi, a Lynda look-a-like. In the surprisingly emotional final episode, Suze thought that Jez was having an affair, so she got Lynda to go undercover to discover the truth. Meanwhile, Tom got a part on the nation's biggest soap: Crossroads, as a bellboy, and finally said goodbye to his flat-mate, leaving her alone and a trifle dejected, but doubtless preparing to bounce back.
