In 'Intruders', Gary (Clunes) falls out with his girlfriend, while his flatmate Dermot (Harry Enfield) falls for their new neighbour. 'The Bet' sees Gary and Dermot engage in a chest contest. 'Alarms and Setbacks' has the two flatmates vying for the affections of Deborah (Leslie Ash). In 'Animals', Gary is surprised when his girlfriend Dorothy (Caroline Quentin) readily accepts his suggestion of an open relationship. 'Sex and Violence' finds Dermot making yet another attempt to woo Deborah, this time with a romantic candelight dinner. Finally, in 'My Brilliant Career', the flatmates encounter trouble at work, with Dermot getting the sack, and Gary preparing to make an uncomfortable announcement.

'Rent Boy' sees Gary beginning to have doubts about Tony's sexuality, while in 'How to Dump Your Girlfriend', Tony decides that he needs to finish with his girlfriend before he can embark on a relationship with neighbour Deborah. 'Troublesome 12 inch' sees Gary in trouble after selling one of Dorothy's records without her knowledge, and in 'Going Nowhere', Tony purchases a van and electric blanket in the hope of seducing Deborah. Unfortunately for everyone, however, she is stuck in a lift with Gary. 'People Behaving Irritatingly' sees Tony's nightmare brother and his girlfriend coming to stay - much to Gary's annoyance.
Tony regrets joining Deborah's keep-fit class; Gary goes in search of a 24-hour chemist; and the boys are horrified when Deborah announces she is planning to sell up and go travelling.

In 'Cowardice', Gary proves himself to be a coward after a road rage incident, and Tony begins to suspect Deborah of having lesbian tendencies. In 'Your Mate v Your Bird', Gary is still having a dilemma over the flatshare problem while Tony gives himself a home-made tattoo. 'Cardigan' sees Gary feeling decidedly middle aged, while in 'Rich and Fat', Tony discovers Gary's huge nest egg. Finally, in 'Home Made Sauna', Debs and Dorothy go away for the weekend - so Gary and Tony invite the girls next door over for the evening.
Gary decides to make an honest woman of Dorothy; and he worries that he has not slept with enough women; while Deborah gets passionate with Tony during a romantic weekend in a caravan.
