In the six editions of the first series, Nigel Slater encourages viewers to grow their own fruit and vegetables, and prepares chicken cakes with herb mayonnaise, free-form trifle with raspberries and custard, bean soup, goat's cheese on garlic toast and tidy Friday pan fry. Nigel also prepares easy recipes with classic ingredients, including sausages and mustard; pork chops with apples and cider; and carrot and coriander fritters. He also rustles up recipes for the winter months, including Moroccan chicken casserole, vegetable curry, lamb hotpot and stuffed pumpkins.
A new run of eight editions began with Nigel Salter visiting allotments and gardens around the country, where he picks up the best fresh produce to prepare his take on beans on toast. During the rest of the series, he prepares meatballs with grated beetroot; Thai spiced aubergines; cheese and thyme puddings; a lentil and chard stew; chocolate cookies; and home-made ice-cream. He also visits a couple whose London barge is an oasis of fruit and veg.
