All seven episodes from the first series of the anthology show in which a number of independent storylines are played out against the unifying backdrop of a traditional British village hall. A village hall is used for any number of purposes: dinners, celebrations, club meetings, even, in tougher times, as a shelter for the people of the village. A number of celebrated writers, including Jack Rosenthal, Willis Hall and Peter Ransley, provide their own take on the role of the village hall and the scenes it plays host to. The episodes are: 'Mr Ellis Versus the People', 'There'll Almost Always Be an England', 'Friendly Encounter', 'Mark Massey Is Dead', 'Dancing in the Dark', 'The Magic Sponge' and 'Distant Islands'.
