Double bill featuring two romantic dramas. 'Beaches' (1988) traces the ups and downs of unlikely friends C.C. (Bette Midler), a brash singer, and Hillary (Barbara Hershey), a conservative rich girl. Meeting as children on a beach in Atlantic City, the two swear lifelong friendship, but don't meet up again until they are in their twenties. C.C. becomes a star, Hillary a lawyer, and they grow apart - but when Hillary contracts a fatal virus, C.C. rushes to her side. In 'When a Man Loves a Woman' San Francisco couple Michael (Andy Garcia) and Alice Green (Meg Ryan) have a happy marriage until the latter's secret drinking binges become a problem. While Michael is away on business, a drunken Alice hits their daughter - an act which convinces her to enrol at a clinic and dry out. Michael does not find coping without his wife easy, and when Alice returns, sober but irritable, their relationship continues to suffer.
