In 1920s Rotterdam, Jacob Katadreuffe (Fedja van Huêt) is arrested for murder when city bailiff Dreverhaven (Jan Decleir), with whom he was seen quarrelling, is found dead. Jacob's story is told in flashback: it transpires that he is Dreverhaven's illegitimate son by housekeeper Joba (Betty Schuurman), who repels her employer's offer of marriage. Jacob becomes obsessed with his father as he grows up, and when he is bankrupted discovers that Dreverhaven was the bailiff responsible. The film won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
