Drama starring Joan Crawford as a rich recluse with an unhealthy grip on a small town and her daughter. Della Chappell (Crawford) lives with her equally reclusive daughter, Jenny (Diane Baker), in a large house outside of town and is seen as all but unapproachable. However, when young lawyer Barney Stafford (Paul Burke) hears that a large corporation is eager to buy some of Della's land he sets out to convince her to sell. Though they keep strange hours, Della and Jenny are more accommodating to Barney than he expects and his relationship with Jenny, in particular, blooms. But will he be able to prise the girl from Della's grasp?
