First performed in Paris in 1843, at the turning point of several eras, Don Pasquale, a composite and varied work, is the apotheosis of opera buffa. Performed for the first time at the Paris Opera, the production has been entrusted to Italian director, Damiano Michieletto, who transports us directly to the sincerity and dramatic splendor at the heart of a seemingly light?hearted work. Bass Michele Pertusi sings the title role, joined by tenor Lawrence Brownlee, whose “instrument of great beauty and expression” is “perfectly suited” to the great operas of Donizetti (NPR Music). Nadine Sierra, winner of the 2017 Richard Tucker Award, sings as the flirtatious and mischievous Norina.
