Poignant African-American family drama set in rural Mississippi, directed by poet Maya Angelou. Unemployed single mother Loretta (Alfre Woodward) lives in Chicago with her two children, Thomas (Mpho Koaho) and autistic daughter Tracy (Kulani Hassen) and her mother, Rosa Lynn (Mary Alice). When drugs and alcohol lead Loretta to neglect her daughter, Rosa Lynn pawns a family heirloom and packs the three off to stay with their Uncle Earl (Al Freeman Jr) in the Mississippi Delta town where Loretta grew up. As Loretta learns about her ancestry and renews her family bonds, she learns how much her own children mean to her, and is finally able to confront her addictions.
